appearance

Marinne stands at 5'4". She has an athletic build with quite a lot of muscle tone and definition, especially in her legs and arms. Her body is pear-shaped with a wider hip structure. Her red hair is thick and reaches the middle of her beck. Normally it is kept up in a ponytail or elaborate bun to keep it out of her face, especially while she is training. Her eyes can vary in shade from stark silver to the entire iris being black. Even on her glamour, she proudly sports scars from many of her battles, mostly slash marks on her arms and chest. Her hands, though small, are weathered and callused from years of combat training. Her face is square and full-cheeked. Her lips are full with a prominent cupids bow. She has a delicate nose and a strong brow. She is slightly boyishUnderneath her glamour, where a beautiful fae should reside, is a monster. Marinne has been in a decades-long state of 'burn out', which occurs when one has been subjected to immense emotional or physical trauma. The body is pushed so far to the edge of its survivability that it will surge with too much magic, causing the individual to inadvertently burn through their magic reserve to defend and save itself. This fundamentally changes the appearance of the fae inside, leaving them corpse like. Marinne is hunched over, and wraith-thin. If she tried to stand up straight, it would physically pain her. Her bones are often visible through her grey, sickly skin. Her face is sallow and dead-eyed. Her eyes are the same color as her glamoured form, only they are slightly larger and deeper set. Her voice is deeper and crackles. She will oftentimes cough up ash, almost like she's choking on it.

history

Marinne Giselle Incandarius was
born to Erid Incandarius and Colvar Incandarius on April 14th, 1899 CE. She was the first born child of the royal house of Embers Keep. A fae child is always a joyous occasion, as reproduction is not often easy. Erid and Colvar had attempted for nearly four decades to bring about an heir before Marinne was born. There was celebration throughout the kingdom for nearly a month upon Marinne's birth. Good fortune was sure to follow the king's reign, even though the heir was a daughter rather than the preferred son.
Appearances were easy to fake, and the citizens never questioned such a happy union and beautiful babe.Though Colvar was a kind king, his wife was not as generous nor as patient as he.Once Marinne had been weaned, Erid saw fit to ignore the child entirely, having done her duty in bearing an heir. A spare had yet to be produced, but she was hardly concerned for the child's welfare. She was mostly left with nursemaids, similar to her elder sibling. While Colvar, her tutors, and her caretaker Hortense did their best to raise her to the standards befitting an heir, she constantly struggled due to her mothers lack of presence and her cruelty toward her. After she became a big sister 20 years later, Marinne's life changed for the worse. Not because of the baby, but because of her Mother.Erid, over the years, had turned many members of the kingdom against Colvar-- labeling him weak-minded and unfit to rule the throne as the surrounding territories gained more and more power. Though they were at peace, Erid had convinced those closest to His Majesty that a coup was the best possible insurance for the kingdom's longevity.Marinne's father was killed during the process. Luckily, Marinne and her younger sibling were spared the sight of his head being cleaved from his body.

Now, with Erid at the highest seat of power and no longer hindered by her husband, she took charge in destroying their kingdom from the ground up. This was all to bring about a "new age" of utter obedience and despair. Every subject and staff member in their home, including the children, were subject to severe "conditioning," leaving most if not all of the citizens in a state of limited power and burn out. While Colvar had always ensured Marinne was adept with a blade, Erid placed her on a more strict training regimen, even using her True Name to make her obey no matter what. After years of training with the soldiers of Erid's army, along with private lessons with the kingdom's most vicious swordsman, Marinne was appointed General of their army. It would have been an honor if it had not been an open secret that Erid only gave her such an honor so that she may die in battle, the last memory of a good ruler dying with her. That isn't to say that she did not find time for her own pursuits. She took up weapon forging to ensure that she would be given the greatest possible chance of survival. She was even taught techniques that would conceal her weapons into things like jewelry or trinkets.Multiple plots for a second coup surfaced over the years, all of which were culled swiftly and without mercy. The only two that remained unknown were those of Marinne and her now-grown brother Pierre. Their methods and strategy differed greatly: harm reduction and a gradual shift of power to something more centered on the kingdom's citizens pitted against someone desperate enough to raze the entire keep to the ground, no matter who got caught in the crossfire. While their adverse circumstances had brought them close, they had reached an impasse that drove a heavy rift between their relationship. This was only exacerbated by the inclusion of their estranged half-sibling Jehan, who Marinne had discovered some years before after Erid had returned from an outing in a rage, citing them as "ungrateful and petulant."She now spends her days testing her bonds and searching for faults, waiting for the right time to strike down their mother for good.

abilities

Fire: Marinne inherited the ability to control fire from both her mother and her father. She can start fire by touching things with her hands, channeling energy into a fixed visual point, and can even breathe it in small amounts. Any part of her body can start a fire on contact, but it is easier to use her feet and hands. While she can control it and keep it contained, if she tries to move the flame, there is a risk that it may extend beyond her limits. The stronger the flame, the easier it is for things to get out of hand. She is also immune to being burned and can sit in exposed flame, even lava, if she wishes it. This part of her magic is severely influenced by her emotions and physical state. She can still light fires if she's burned out, but they are on a much, much smaller scale. Though, they are easier to control to the point where she barely has to think about it.Healing Factor: Thanks to her heritage, Marinne can heal at a faster rate than humans. She can repair severe bodily damage and has resistance to some poisons. She can regrow limbs, but it takes months or even years to fully heal and takes the bulk of her energy.Glamour: Her outward appearance may be altered into anything she wishes. While it is simple magic, it does still take energy. If she is running low on magic or if her emotions fluctuate too quickly, it can flicker or fade entirely. It cannot alter her eyes, and they are the only thing that remain unchanged between forms.Animal Shifting: Marinne's signet ring allows her to take the form of a fox for a brief period. She cannot speak or otherwise communicate while in this form.True Names: Utilizing the power of the names given to those at birth, she can control the name bearer. This can be used with intent (making the magic more powerful and much stronger to resist) or it can even happen unintentionally. The more parts of the name someone uses, the harder it is to resist.Long-Lived: Marinne has a very long lifespan and may live for millennia if not otherwise influenced.

weaknesses

Iron: As a fae, one of their biggest weaknesses is iron. It burns her on contact and the scars will never heal. While her healing factor may kick in to close any exposed wounds, it will heal at half the rate it usually does. If ingested, it can kill her in large doses or cause severe organ damage if she manages to survive. The tissue scarring could potentially become fatal if it somehow reached the heart.Fae Bane: Fae Bane is known but to very few, and is difficult to craft due to the rarity of fae. It is made of ground up bones of dead fae, and a mixture of herbs and chemicals. The recipe for this deadly poison has been passed down through generations of hunter families and has only been improved upon as time has passed. Even the smallest amounts that are inhaled can make Marinne feel sick. It is an unrelenting sickness that cannot be soothed by food, or rest, or medication. It causes fever, nausea, dizziness, seizures, and can severely cripple Marinne's magical abilities. If they were to ingest more than a tablespoon, there would be no cure. Marinne would die in a matter of hours. The only way to stop the sickness is if it is completely removed from the site (through extensive cleaning, vacuuming, usage of magic, etc.) The effects would linger for days as her body tried to expel the poison from her system.Heart: The subspecies of fae that Marinne belongs to is weak to physical damage to the heart, as it is where every ounce of their magic and life force are stored. She can be killed through direct, extreme damage.True Name: Just like how Marinne can use the true names of others, someone can also use her name against her. Under orders, her magic can be utilized and she can be forced to do or say things she would otherwise not do. She cannot be ordered to kill herself, however, and if given an order like ‘hold your breath’ she would simply hold it until she passed out and then start breathing again. If told to hang/drown/fatally wound herself, it will not take effect. She cannot be forced to confess something that she does not know, and cannot be forced to do something outside of her physical capabilities (pick up things 3 times her weight, be on another continent in 5 minutes, etc.)Burn Out: As mentioned prior, Marinne's subspecies of fae can be subjected to a concept known as "burn out." This leaves the creature severely weakened and in an altered physical and magical state. Any magic she has is reduced exponentially to a bare simmer. She is as close to mortal as she ever will be while in this state. It can be remedied by consuming magic from objects, ingesting potions that heighten one's magic, or simply waiting for their magic to replenish itself. While it is taboo, some have been known to consume the flesh and hearts of dead or dying fae to try to build up their reserves once more and recover. Others do not give the courtesy of waiting, and many people have been murdered or assassinated so that they are not left vulnerable.

relations

PIERREPierre Incandarius is Marinne's younger brother. While she tried to look out for him as much as she could, their mother's machinations left them quite distant while Pierre was growing up. As they both aged and Erid slightly loosened her grip, they started having a relationship that could even be described as amiable. They began to work together to stage a second coup against their mother, but had to pursue their goals separately as Marinne was not comfortable with Pierre's more radical, ends-justify-the-means stance. In more recent years, any notion of a close sibling relationship has vanished. They are often hostile, even violent with each other when they aren't avoiding one another. Though Marinne doesn't instigate their brawls, she isn't afraid to injure him to finish them. She mourns every day for the loss of the sibling she wished that she could have had.◈VALERIAN
(@LILITHIIAN)
Marinne got to know Valerian from the many times they had sought out Remedy for shelter against her mother's wrath. Initially assuming him to be Jehan's fiancé due to a miscommunication, the two formed a swift, genial friendship between them. They both have an eye for swordsmanship and smithing. They have even dueled on a few occasions. While their relationship is physical-- initiated during a blood-sharing ritual so that they could have a line of communication-- it is with few strings and little pressure. Marinne is grateful to have an equal. Though Valerian isn't separate from the family drama by virtue of knowing Jehan, he does give her a small reprieve and plenty of banter to drown out the noise.◈ANASTATSIAAnother fae and friend that Marinne met because of their sister, Anastasia is one of Marinne's nearest and dearest. While they cannot meet in their own realm, the mortal world has offered ample time for them to spend together when Marinne is able to escape the shadow of the Ember Keep. The Bee Hive became a place of refuge for her, and Anastasia a dear companion along with it. They share a playful and flirtatious friendship that serves to lift her spirits.

story

Marinne is currently taking an extended stay away from the Fae Realm to recover after an incident with her brother. He had tried killing her in her sleep, both out of desperation for his own power back, as well as trying to remove one more complication from his plan for their mother's removal. She has sought out any and all manners of cloaking and shielding herself as Erid has not yet placed a limitation on the extent of her stays from home. While she had initially taken up her room at Remedy once again, she is seeking other accommodation so as to not put Jehan at risk.
